HakMun Privacy Policy

Version 2026-06-09-v3 · Last updated: June 9, 2026

⚠️ Do not input sensitive, personal, or confidential information. Content in HakMun may be processed by AI services.

V Gibbs & Company LLC ("we," "us," or "our") operates the HakMun application ("App"). This Privacy Policy describes what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices available to you.

We built HakMun with a deliberate approach to privacy: we collect the minimum information needed for the app to work, and nothing more.

1. Information We Collect

From Apple Sign-In

When you sign in with Apple, we receive only Apple's opaque "subject" identifier — an anonymous string unique to HakMun. We do not request your name or email address through Apple's sign-in scopes. We do not store your Apple ID. On subsequent logins, Apple returns only this same anonymous identifier.

From Google Sign-In

When you sign in with Google, we store only Google's opaque "subject" identifier — the same anonymous approach as Apple. Google's standard sign-in token also includes your email address and name; we do not store either. Our user records have no email field at all.

User-Created Identity

You choose a username (required) and may optionally provide a display name, city, and country. These are for in-app identification and optional practice personalization.

Profile Summary

An optional free-text field used solely to personalize practice material. We explicitly recommend that you provide fictional scenarios rather than real personal information.

Content Items

Sentences, vocabulary, and grammar patterns extracted from imported documents or generated by AI. These are stored server-side (Railway-hosted PostgreSQL) to enable practice across your devices.

Learning History

Practice events, vocabulary encounters, and learning progress are stored in your account so your practice carries across your devices. Your progress is visible to a teacher only if you turn on progress sharing (see "Classes and Teachers" below).

Apple Music Data

With your permission via Apple's MusicKit, HakMun reads playlist and song metadata from your Apple Music library. This data is used locally to build Korean listening practice around music you enjoy. Music data is not sent to OpenAI, Anthropic, or any third-party AI service. HakMun does not modify your Apple Music library (read-only access). You can revoke MusicKit permission at any time in your device's Settings.

Google Docs

Read-only access to documents you explicitly choose to import. Documents remain in your Google account. Only highlighted or selected text is processed. Selected text from your Google Docs is shared with OpenAI for content extraction and classification. During development and maintenance, Google Docs content stored in the database may be accessed by Anthropic’s AI tools (Claude Code). No Google user data is shared with, transferred to, or disclosed to any other third party. We do not sell, license, or provide Google user data to data brokers, advertising platforms, or any other external parties. You can revoke access at any time through your Google Account settings.

2. What We Do Not Collect

No email addresses. No real names. No Apple ID or Google account details. No device location — the app never asks for it; the only location data is the optional city and country you enter yourself. No advertising identifiers, and no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use collected information solely to operate the App — authenticating you, storing your content, and generating practice material you request. If you opt in, we analyze your practice activity to customize your experience — this is off by default, and you can turn it off at any time. We do not use your information for advertising or analytics profiling. We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.

4. Classes and Teachers

If you join a class, your teacher can see your display name, username, profile photo, and primary language. Everything else is up to you:

These switches are off by default, and you can change them at any time in your profile. Teachers never see your sign-in identity or email, and leaving a class ends the teacher's access.

5. AI Processing — User-Facing

OpenAI (API)

When you highlight text for import or practice list generation, the following is sent to OpenAI's API:

Never sent to OpenAI: your username, display name, profile details, Apple identifier, Google Doc URL, or any other account information.

OpenAI's API data usage policy states that API data is not used for model training. See OpenAI's Privacy Policy.

DALL·E (Vocabulary Images)

We use OpenAI's DALL·E image generation service to create vocabulary flashcard illustrations. This is a batch, admin-only process using vocabulary words and descriptions from our database — no user-authored content is sent for image generation.

6. AI Processing — Development & Maintenance

Anthropic (Claude Code / API)

We use Anthropic's AI tools for building and maintaining HakMun. During development and troubleshooting, these tools may process application data, including user-generated content items stored in the database. Anthropic's commercial API terms state that API data is not used for model training. See Anthropic's Privacy Policy.

OpenAI (Development Tools)

OpenAI tools are also used in a development capacity. The same no-training policy applies for API usage.

Important distinction: User-facing AI processing (content classification, sentence generation) sends only the specific text being processed plus proficiency context. Development tools may have broader access to the application stack during maintenance, but both Anthropic and OpenAI operate under data processing terms that prohibit using API data for model training.

7. Third-Party Services

We use the following services to operate HakMun:

We do not use any separate data warehouse, analytics platform, or third-party data storage beyond what is listed above.

8. Google API Compliance

HakMun's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We use Google data solely for document import functionality and do not enable unauthorized human access to your data.

9. Data Retention

Your data is retained while your account remains active. Content items you import or generate are stored on our server to enable the App's features. You can delete individual content items within the app. You may request full account deletion at any time by contacting us.

10. Your Rights and Choices

For California residents: We do not sell personal information as defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). You have the right to know what personal information we collect and to request its deletion.

11. Children

HakMun is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without a parent or guardian's consent. Accounts for children under 13 must be created and supervised by a parent or guardian. If you believe a child has provided us personal information without consent, contact us and we will delete it.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated version number. Material changes require re-acceptance within the App before you can continue using the service.
